Alarm clock works but not as intuitive as I'd like. It's more difficult than necessary to verify the alarm time. But alarm is loud enough to wake us up when camping.
Great transmission distance and antenna is sturdier than most portables. Used the privacy codes which worked better than both my differently branded handhelds, they sometimes squelch off for the first half second of another radio on the main channel before understanding the sender is not using the privacy code. It can be annoying to repeatedly hear that static in an otherwise quiet setting. This radio doesnt do that.
Camping-wise having the FM radio was awesome but you can use receive or transmit when in FM mode.
Spinning the fairly loud handcrank a minute charged the included rechargeable batteries from dead to enough power for transmitting and receiving once quickly.
The only problem is the battery level indicator shows full or almost full when it wasnt leaving us outside with only the crank. Luckily we had some spare non rechargeables that worked fine. Remember not to crank with standard batteries installed!
Overall a great unit, small and light and you can choose to use the speaker/mic or the mic built into the unit. The removable shoulder strap made it easily accessible while carrying a pack. Also came with car charger.
Wish list: built in compass, monitoring multiple channels, built in solar charging.
The radio:
My area (Fargo, ND) only sends one weather(wx) band out for us, and I receive it just as clear as if I'm listening on the TV, which really isn't to say it's great, that's their problem not mine. AM/FM radio comes in clear, though I do believe it's a mono speaker, which I really don't care about. It worked great while I was doing some work outside one day, I don't need sterio. The GMRS I've hardly used. I haven't sent at all, but I have monitored channels and found them to be quite clear. After driving 10 miles I was still able to receive the same people talking as I had at my origin point so I'd say the receive power at least is very strong. The LED flashlight is much brighter then I expected. I expected a single low quality LED for emergency viewing, but this has 3 high powered White light LED's. Case construction seems quite adequate, not quite portable enough for a rugged long term backpacking trip, but then that's not the intent.
Downsides:
1. Midland support is non-existent. I emailed a week ago and haven't received a response yet. I want to know if the emergency weather feature which kicks over to the weather radio channel if an alert goes out, will work with the radio off. The radio has power since the clock/alarm stays functioning, but I'll likely have to wait till a big storm shows up again to find out.
Update: I removed one star from this product because the emergency weather alert only goes off if the radio is on. My area decided to become tornado ally this year and I really was hoping this product would wake me up if a tornado warning was issued, but it doesn't. To be fair, it'd be very annoying to keep getting woken up for severe thunderstorm warmings, but I'd deal with it. I think it'd be a very nice feature to be able to turn on if worried that night about tornado activity. On the upside, I can just listen to the radio while I sleep and get alerted, or set the radio to monitor a GMRS channel that's not likely to get traffic from 11PM-8AM. The radio has plenty of batter power to least days on radio mode, I haven't tried GMRS all night yet.
2. The emergency weather alert feature is turned off by default. Who would want an 'emergency' radio, to not notify you of the emergency by default?
3. The radio doesn't tell you when it's charging. This wouldn't be a terribly bad issue if my truck's cigarette lighter worked all the time, but sometimes I have to finagle it and I can't tell if it's working or not. No light on the power adapters to tell if power is received either.
4. The manual says not to keep this radio plugged in all the time, only when the batteries are dead. I'm not sure the reason for this, and if this is a necessary action then I'm not sure why they call it a base station. I'm going to leave it plugged in and see what happens.
